If you want to book a relaxing, laid-back vacation where you can sit on the beach and drink strawberry daiquiris, then Montana isn't the place for you.

We all know how gorgeous Montana is, but that's just not its forte. I suppose you could vacation at Flathead Lake with a daiquiri in hand, but it won't give you beach bum vibes.

Montana is still a great place to vacation, but for a different reason. In fact, it's one of the BEST places for a specific type of vacation, according to a recent study.

Montana was named one of the "best states for an adventure vacation."

Wander, a luxury vacation website, named Montana as the 3rd best state for an adventure vacation in 2026.

To find out where adventure feels most rewarding in 2026, we created this index, ranking all 50 US states on access to land, water, and winter experiences. - Matt with Wander

National parks, accessibility to outdoor locations, camping access, and other factors were worked into the equation that resulted in  Montana ranking as the 3rd best state.

The only states Montana trailed were Alaska and Wyoming. I thought it was surprising that Wyoming was the top state over Alaska, but good for them.

Montana ranked so highly thanks to horseback riding trails. We have 216.2 horseback trails per 100,000 people, ranking number one in the country.

Plus, Glacier National Park is a nice boost.
