What They Found Inside Marshall Mountain’s Old Ski Shop

Marshall Mountain has undergone many changes over the years. 

A New Beginning for Outdoor Adventures

These days, the mountain is entering a new chapter. In 2024, Missoula County purchased Marshall Mountain with plans to turn it into a place where people can enjoy outdoor activities, including mountain biking, hiking, and a whole lot more. 

But for many people in Missoula, Marshall Mountain isn't just a place on a map. 

It brings back memories. 

It certainly does for me. 

Recently, I came across an Instagram post that brought back a lot of those memories.

Rediscovering the Past: A Time Capsule Unearthed 

When the project of cleaning out Marshall Mountain began, crews discovered what had been sitting inside the old ski rental shop. 

The shop had closed in 2003, and apparently nobody had really touched it for about 20 years. 

What they found was essentially a time capsule from Marshall Mountain's past.

Treasures of Yesteryear: Donating History

The items that were cleaned out were donated to Hellgate High School, and thankfully, the whole process was documented. 

Personal Nostalgia: My Memories of Marshall Mountain

Looking at those pictures brought back a LOT of memories for me. 

Marshall Mountain was where I learned to ski.

Marshall Mountain has been part of some pretty interesting moments in Missoula history. 

The Beastie Boys famously came to Missoula and skied at Marshall Mountain when they opened their tour here.

One of my siblings even got married at Marshall Mountain. 

Years ago, when the Hells Angels came to Missoula for a rally, their compound was located on Marshall Mountain. 

A Mountain Rich with Stories

That's a LOT of history for one mountain. 

Now Marshall Mountain is starting another chapter. 

I love the idea that this place, which has meant so much to so many people over the years, is going to continue to be a place where people make new memories. 

Snapshots of History: The Importance of Memory

But there's something pretty special about getting a glimpse of what was there before. 

Those old ski shop pictures are more than just pictures of an old building. 

They're a snapshot of Missoula. 

They're a snapshot of Marshall Mountain. 

For some of us, they're a snapshot of our own childhood.

Preserving the Legacy: Thank You to the Cleanup Crew 

So, thanks to the crew that cleaned everything out and helped to preserve and document what they found. 

You might recognize something. 

You might even have a Marshall Mountain story of your own. 

Because that place means a lot to me.
