This edition of Meet the Griz is more of a goodbye and a thank you rather than a true Meet the Griz. Grizzly Football radio color commentator and Deputy Athletic Director Greg Sundberg announced he’ll be stepping away from the radio booth this season.
"I want to sincerely thank everyone who made this journey so special. A heartfelt thank you to Riley Corcoran, Don Perkins, Ace Sauerwein, Denny Bedard, Dan Ingram, Eric Taber and the entire Grizzly Sports Properties crew," Sundberg told GoGriz.com last week.
We had Sundberg on The Daily Drive with Ace Sauerwein for an ‘exit interview,’ and also to clear the air: Sundberg is NOT leaving the University of Montana.
"I appreciate everybody's texts and concerns. 'Are you sick?' I got those. 'Are you sick? Are you fired? Are you staying in athletics? Are you staying in Missoula?' And those are all out of care," joked Sundberg.
Why is Sundberg Stepping Away From the Booth?
It's a mix of things as to why Sundberg is stepping out of the radio booth.
"I've talked about this with my family for a couple of years now... There comes a point where I think between my job and its role and how its involved the last few years... and kids, family, all those things tied into the commitment. When you don't feel like you can give it all, I think it's time to step back."
Sundberg will put a bow on his radio career after 19 years on the sideline and in the booth. As you'd expect, lots of memories rack up over almost two decades, but two games stand out above the rest.
"One, when I was doing the sidelines, everybody knows it I'll just say it, the playoff game against App State.
"And then of course, North Dakota State, semifinal game, enough said, right?"
